Bachelor of Arts - Classical Studies

Program Overview

The Classical Studies program is designed for students who wish to study the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome either as a secondary interest (e.g. a double major) or as preparation for entrance into further professional studies (architecture, education, journalism, law, library science, museum studies).

Classical Studies offers students the option of studying the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome with only minimal or no language study.  It is a perfect fit for those who wish to develop their interest in and knowledge of Ancient Greece and Rome but who do not wish to continue their study of ancient societies into a career or post-graduate study.

Classical studies is the study of the Ancient Mediterranean world through literary and material remains. Unlike the program in classics, students in classical studies have far lighter requirements in Greek and Latin language: there are no language requirements at the major or minor levels.

Instead, classical studies students can experience the ancient world through the department’s wide range of courses on the societies of Greece and Rome and their neighbours. Students in the classical studies program may, of course, still take one or more courses in Greek and Latin language, which can count towards degree requirements.

Students can also take part in a travel-study program to Greece or Rome, and participate in summer archaeology field-schools in the Mediterranean.
