Program Overview

Are you ready to take your career in education to a new level? Vancouver Island University’s Master of Education in Educational Leadership program is designed for practicing and aspiring professionals in the education field who are focused on bringing educational and instructional leadership into their schools.

VIU's graduate program is enriched with school administration, educational psychology and educational research teachings that provide students the foundational building blocks to become innovative leaders in the school system. This program prepares students with the practical, ethical, and social tools to solve problems, manage conflict and encourage growth. Graduates of the program find employment in leadership positions in the education sector, both domestically and abroad.

The Master of Education in Educational Leadership Program
This cohort-based model is designed for students wishing to study full-time on the VIU campus. All formal coursework is completed over two semesters. The Field Inquiry and Major Project components are completed during the second year over two semesters. Students may complete these components with online support and can complete up to one semester early.

The M.Ed. in Educational Leadership provides a program of preparation for aspiring and practicing school leaders. Grounded in the rich educational leadership literature supplemented by extensive faculty expertise and experience, the program provides a balance of research, policy and practice. Graduates of our program will have demonstrated the knowledge, skills and attitudes of successful leaders as outlined in the Leadership Standards for BC Principals and Vice-Principals. These competencies are central to formal and informal leadership in schools.

The M.Ed. program will develop leaders who can:

Guide the development and implementation of shared values, vision, mission and goals to support learning for all students;
Foster quality learning opportunities to support student learning;
Lead teams in becoming assessment literate;
Create systems and structures for the effective supervision of learning;
Provide strong leadership in the area of Aboriginal Education;
Provide knowledgeable guidance regarding current curricula, instructional and assessment practices and their impact on student learning;
Sustain a collaborative learning culture and climate linked to student learning and based on distributed leadership;
Build positive and effective interdependencies amongst partner groups;
Incorporate systemic thinking and strategic planning for school improvement;
Demonstrate self-knowledge and the personal qualities that support positive relationships and build cultures of integrity;
Build and support relational trust within the school and community;
Address issues of diversity and social justice;
Lead teams in reflective inquiry and action research.

Career Opportunities
Domestic graduates of the M.Ed. program will be well-poised to assume leadership positions in the education sector, both domestically and abroad, including that of Principal and Vice-Principal. Based on survey data from the BC Principals and Vice-Principals Association and the age demographic of BC educators, the Ministry of Education predicts over 1,000 administrative vacancies over the next five years. Employers require a Master's Degree for administrative positions. Recently, some school districts have made public their preference for a graduate degree from a BC post-secondary institution.

VIU World-Wide Entrance Scholarships

Number: Maximum 20 each year
Amount: $2,000 each
Criteria: Provided annually to exceptional new long-term academic undergraduate student applicants (not one semester Education Abroad or Exchange students). Students who come to VIU for ESL with conditional acceptance into an undergraduate program will be considered for these scholarships. Awarded to up to 20 of the top applicants entering in the Fall semester based on entering grades from submitted transcripts. No application necessary.

British Columbia High School International Excellence Entrance Scholarship

Number: Maximum 3 each year
Amount: $1,000 per year for up to 4 years of Academic study
Criteria: All International student applicants who have applied to attend VIU in their graduating year from a British Columbia High School with a Dogwood Certificate. Highest average in combined marks of English 12 (combined provincial and school mark), social Studies 11 and Math 11 (Principles or applications). Awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University in their second academic semester. No application necessary. Awarding of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year scholarships is dependent on retention of a GPA of 3 or better.

The High School at Vancouver Island University International Excellence Award

Number: Minimum 2 each year
Amount: $1,000 each
Criteria: Awarded to international student graduates of The High School at Vancouver Island University recognizing outstanding achievement in their final academic year of studies. No application necessary, awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University.

VIU International Undergraduate Regional Scholarships

Number: Seven each year
Amount: $5,000 ($2,500 awarded for the first year of study and $2,500 for the second year)

- China - 1 scholarship
- India - 1 scholarship
- Eastern Europe/CIS* - 1 scholarship
- Africa - 1 scholarship
- Latin America - 1 scholarship
- ASEAN ** - 1 scholarship
- Open - 1 scholarship. The open scholarship is available to students from any nation outside of the countries already identified in the other Regional Scholarships.
Criteria: The scholarships are awarded to International students applying for entry into the first year of an undergraduate academic program. The award is based upon the entered grades from submitted High School transcripts. No application is necessary.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Entrance Scholarship
Full Program Scholarships

Number: Maximum 3 per year
Amount: $1,000 per year for up to 4 years of Academic study
Criteria: Open to all International students who have graduated with an IB diploma. Selection is based upon highest average of combined marks from an IB school. Awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University in their second academic semester. No application necessary. Awarding of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year scholarships is dependent on retention of a GPA of 3 or better.

Entry Scholarships

Number: All IB Diploma holders receive this scholarship.
Amount: $1,000 each for the first year of study
Criteria: New International student graduates with an IB diploma. Awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University in their second academic semester. No application necessary.

British Columbia Offshore School Entrance Scholarship

Number: Maximum 2 each year
Amount: $1,000 each
Criteria: All international student graduates from BC Offshore schools are eligible. The awards will be given to the two students with the highest combined scores on any two Grade 12 provincially examinable courses excluding their first language. Awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University in their second academic semester. No application necessary.

Student Visa For Canada

Any student who wishes to study in Canada requires a student visa. Some of the essential information for the application process is given below.

When Should I Apply?

4 to 6 months

Ideally, one should apply for the study permit at least 4 to 6 months before the commencement of your course/program.

Bank Account

No Need!

There is no need for a blocked bank account to apply for a student visa to Canada.

Duration of visa

Course Duration + 3 Months

The student visa is valid for the entire period of your course plus three months.
