Certificate in Millwork and Carpentry

Program Overview

In the Millwork and Carpentry program, you will gain hands-on skills in the design and construction of wood structures, cabinets, shelving units and furniture. This certificate program will explore the two traditional woodworking trades of Cabinetmaker and Carpenter, with an emphasis on tools and safety.

Millwork and Carpentry is a dynamic program that prepares graduates for many exciting careers in the woodworking industries, including as a Cabinetmaker or a Carpenter. This program's practical and theoretical instruction is current, highly-applicable and develops skills while using NAIT's modern, well-equipped wood shops and high-tech classrooms and computer labs.

Semester 1

This semester offers an exploratory introduction to the two traditional woodworking trades, cabinetmaking and carpentry. Basic knowledge of woodworking skills and theory common to both trades is taught, with an emphasis on tools and safety. An in-depth knowledge of hand-tool use leads directly to power equipment operation, producing trained graduates with a broad knowledge and skill base required for today's workplace.

Semester 2

Students specialize in either the cabinetmaking or carpentry stream. Each stream emphasizes materials and techniques relevant to that trade specialization.

The Cabinetmaking stream (Millwork), introduces students to construction of both upper and lower casework, complete with doors, drawer, moldings, hardware and exposure to a variety of different materials used in the trade.

The Carpentry stream provides an introduction to residential home construction in foundations, framing and finishing carpentry.

Program curriculum covers material outlined in first- and second-year apprenticeship programs. Students who successfully complete this certificate program are eligible to challenge the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) first-year exams for program credit.
