Diploma in Photographic Technology

Program Overview

In preparation for professional photographic careers, students learn to handle both the technical and aesthetic requirements of quality photographic image production including camera, lighting and processing. They develop skills in portrait and wedding photography, commercial and industrial, photojournalism, fine art photography and digital image capture and processing.

This program prepares students for a career in photography by providing a comprehensive technical curriculum emphasizing digital image capture and processing. Students are required to purchase a digital camera permitting professional work. Recognizing that it is important to plan finances well in advance, we recommend a budget of $2500.00 specifically for the camera. The program promotes a practical, hands-on approach to learning, supported by appropriate theory. Students are given the opportunity to interact with industry professionals through guest lectures, seminars, assignment critiques, studio visits, field trips, work experience practicums and participation in professional association activities.

Photographic Technology students learn to successfully handle a wide range of camera systems, apply optimum lighting in various settings, produce images for specific professional needs, process images through digital means, develop applied computer skills and explore the creativity of electronic imaging. Courses in business practices, effective communications, business law, accounting and related issues prepare students for a variety of workplace situations.

Students will experience every aspect of the professional photographer's work life, including:

  • Image communication using colour, elements and design principles
  • Understanding photographic history and evolution
  • Photographic techniques
  • Electronic imaging
  • Photographic lighting
  • Photojournalism
  • Portraiture
  • Commercial/industrial photography
  • Fine art photography
  • Communications and business programs and practices

Graduates of the Photographic Technology program are employed in hospitals, police departments, colleges, government and scientific laboratories, providing photographic support services for these institutions. Other opportunities exist in photo marketing as well as in media fields such as newspapers, magazines, and multimedia and information technologies.
