Program Overview

Humber’s Inclusive Resource Practice - Child and Family graduate certificate program offers a unique opportunity to pursue an exciting and challenging career. This program prepares you to collaborate with a diverse community of professionals, individuals and families to navigate a range of services in order to support the inclusion of individuals with diverse abilities. Through our practical, skill-based curriculum, you will develop many valuable skills including how to:

  • Cultivate reflective practice skills to support personal and professional growth
  • Apply the principles of person centred practice
  • Engage in responsive inclusive planning
  • Promote and facilitate responsive relationships
  • Navigate systems for continuity of service

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Engage in reflective practice to analyze personal biases, strengths, perspecitves, and values in support of meaningful professional practive and personal growth
  • Adhere to and uphold legal and ethical standards within professional scopes of person-centered practice
  • Collaborate with a diverse community of individuals, families, and professionals using a variety of communication techniques to provide responsive and meaningful services
  • Implement approaches and/or strategies for responsive inclusive planning with families and individuals with diverse abilities
  • Communicate clearly, concisely and accurately in written, spoken, and visual forms to support navigation and continuity of service for individuals/children/families/communities
  • Engage in authentic assessment by differentiating, selecting, and implementing appropriate observation methods and screening/assessment tools
  • Analyze research in daily practice in the field of special needs for the purpose of knowledge translation with individuals/children/families and various service partners.
  • Conduct qualitative research to contribute to current and emerging practices specific to the field of inclusion
  • Establish and maintain responsive relationships with child/family/individual/community to ensure a continuum of service
  • Consider historical, current, and emerging theories and practices to inform responsive inclusive practices

Work Placement
Beginning in Semester 2, you will have an opportunity to gain work experience by participating in an on-campus work placement. In your second year, you will be eligible to participate in a placement off campus, such as retail, small business, community centres and restaurants.
